Our House Champagne Wins Award
John Downes 19th July 2006 9:15am
Everyone who has tasted our house Champagne knows how good it is, but it is always good to see the experts in agreement! So here is the good news: Champagne Gremillet has scored a silver medal and a 91/100 score at the 2006 International Wine Challenge. Here are some notable quotes from the tasting:
'Classic nose. White peach and hawthorn on nose. Palate has chalky grip, very firm acidity' SF
'Quite rich, fruit, chocolate, coffee. Ripe and full palate, chocolate, greengages and an elegant finish' DS
'Delicious, rich and complex' TS
Champagne Gremillet are a small, but beautifully formed family-owned Champagne house, situated in the far south of the Champagne district in Balnot Sur Laignes, near the town of Les Riceys. Due to its southern latitude the grapes achieve greater ripeness, which leads to a richer fruit and classic baked-biscuit flavours mixed with characteristic toasty yeast overtones.
Gremillet own approx 18 hectares of vines and buy grapes on 25-30 year contracts from growers in another 7 hectares. Approximately 80% of their grapes are Pinot Noir and 20% Chardonnay. Their annual production is approximately 300,000 bottles (all sold in bottle, none sold as bulk wine). Around 65% of their production is exported to over 80 countries (mainly into the French Embassies in old French colonial countries).
Other notable quotes:
'A light yellow colour, this champagne is fresh and young, with a good finish.'
Wedding Magazine, December/January 2006.
'In my blind tasting this grower's Champagne came right up the top against stiff competition. Snap it up quickly. And then remember the name for next time.'
Sarah Jane Evans, BBC Good Food Magazine.
